Supervision is the primary vehicle through which clinical competence is transmitted — yet most supervisors receive little or no formal training in how to supervise. This full-day continuing education program introduces licensed clinicians and supervisors to the Cognitive Apprenticeship Model (CAM) of psychotherapy supervision: a structured, experiential framework in which trainees learn by observing expert clinicians, participating in live therapy sessions alongside them, and gradually assuming greater responsibility as competence develops.

Drawing on Collins' Cognitive Apprenticeship framework, Feinstein's three articles on the Apprenticeship Model of Psychotherapy Training and Supervision, and decades of clinical teaching at major academic medical centers, the program moves from the fundamentals of the supervisory frame and case formulation through a rigorous comparative analysis of supervision modalities — case-based, video/audio, process notes, and live supervision a description of the CAM supervision format, — and then the into the practical implementation of CAM's six core teaching tools: Modeling, Coaching, Scaffolding, Articulation, Reflection, and Exploration. The day concludes with an open discussion in which participants can bring their own supervision challenges for collegial consultation.

Participants will gain practical, evidence-informed competencies in clinical supervision, including :

The supervisory frame, case formulation, and tools for tracking treatment across sessions
Comparative analysis of supervision modalities: case-based, video/audio, process notes, and live experiential supervision
Theory and practical implementation of the Cognitive Apprenticeship Model (CAM) of psychotherapy supervision
The triad structure (supervisor, trainee, patient) across opening, working-through, and termination phases
Six CAM teaching tools: Modeling, Coaching, Scaffolding, Articulation, Reflection, and Exploration
Developing individualized case formulations that target strengths, vulnerabilities, stressors, and therapeutic goals
Evidence-informed methods for promoting adaptive functioning, resilience, and incremental behavioral change

Discuss the relevant benefits, uses, and limitations of case-based, video/audio, process note, and live supervision modalities, and identify which approaches are best suited to specific supervisory contexts
Implement CAM supervision, including the format, structure, and conduct of the opening, working-through, and termination phases of a 6–20 session live experiential psychotherapy supervision
Demonstrate foundational competencies in at least four of the six CAM teaching tools — Modeling, Coaching, Socratic Questioning, and Reflection — applied to real-world psychotherapy supervision

This intensive, one-day program integrates didactic instruction, live demonstration, and experiential practice. Participants engage directly with CAM supervision tools through role-play, modeling exercises, and Socratic dialogue. The afternoon sessions focus on hands-on application of CAM tools to real supervisory cases, and the final session provides structured space for participants to present their own supervision challenges. No two participants will leave with the same learning — the program is designed to meet clinicians where they are.

This program is designed for licensed mental health clinicians — psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and counselors — who supervise trainees or wish to develop formal competencies in clinical supervision. It is equally relevant to residency training directors, practicum supervisors, and senior clinicians seeking a structured, evidence-based framework for their supervisory work.

Robert E. Feinstein, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Northwell/Zucker/Hofstra School of Medicine. He developed the Cognitive Apprenticeship Model (CAM) of Psychotherapy Supervision — a live, triad-based experiential supervision framework — for which he received the Association for Academic Psychiatry's Education Achievement Award in 2023. He is founder and CEO of Empathian and has held senior academic leadership roles at Columbia University, New York Medical College, the University of Colorado, and Dell Medical School. He is the author of more than 100 publications and three Oxford University Press textbooks.
