The Apprenticeship Model of Psychotherapy Supervision
Learn psychotherapy by doing it—with expert guidance in real time. This innovative approach incorporates evidence-based interventions, making it a valuable resource for mental health professionals.
What Makes This Different?
Unlike traditional supervision that solely reviews past sessions, the Apprenticeship Model emphasizes live, hands-on experience—similar to how physicians learn surgery or musicians master their instrument. This method has been honored with the Association for Academic Psychiatry's Education Achievement Award (2023) and transforms how clinicians develop therapeutic skills, clinical intuition, and authentic presence.
How It Works
Live Supervision with Your Patient
Virtual sessions are conducted as a triad: supervisor, patient, and you, with the necessary patient consent. Typically, it involves 5-20 sessions using supportive and psychodynamic approaches, integrating techniques from CBT, DBT, MBT, and TFP as needed.
Three Phases (5 to 20 Sessions are Divided into Thirds):
Phase 1: Observe (1/3 of total sessions)
The supervisor leads while you observe and occasionally participate, allowing you to see theory translate into real-time decisions.
Phase 2: Practice with Live Coaching (1/3 of total sessions)
You take the lead while the supervisor observes, providing redirection and guidance exactly when you need it.
Phase 3: Independent Practice (1/3 of total sessions)
You proceed according to your preference—supervisor stays live, watches via recording, or steps out. Sessions are recorded for later review.
Six Tools That Accelerate Learning
Building Technical Skills
1. Scaffolding – Teaching tailored to your experience level.
2. Modeling & Observing – Watch master clinicians and allow them to observe you.
3. Live Coaching – Receive guidance during sessions when you need it most.
Developing Clinical Reasoning
4. Articulation – Socratic questioning helps you think like a therapist.
5. Reflection – Explore countertransference and your therapeutic process.
6. Exploration – Investigate formulation, theories, strategies, and techniques.
What You'll Develop
You will learn to read subtle emotional cues and manage your own reactions, enhance your clinical judgment about when to intervene and when to listen, and build alliances with patients that others may find impossible. This training will foster your intuition for guiding real-time decisions and boost your confidence when handling challenging cases.
